52 Blue” refers to the 52-hertz whale, often called the “world’s loneliest whale” due to its unique frequency, which is different from any other whale species. This solitary call inspired us, symbolising our own journey to find a unique voice in the vast sea of music. Through this album, we hope to share our journey and connect with listeners on a deeper level, much like the hauntingly beautiful call of the 52-hertz whale.
The name 52 Blue came late in the album process, during a period of recording in a rented house surrounded by mountains and fields, where we indulged in the best Gruyère cheese and scenic walks with the dog. Here, we had ample time to experiment with sound effects. Many of these, created using synthesisers or guitar pedals, reminded us of whales crying, a sound that felt both mystical and poignant. Imagining the vastness of the ocean, the deep, resonant whale calls evoked a sense of awe and tranquility, echoing the profound bond between nature and existence.
Since its inception in 2021, 52 Blue has been a labour of love. Our first album is the result of an evolving creative journey, where we constantly refined our songs in search of our unique sound. As avid enthusiasts of various music genres, we faced the challenging task of striving for an elusive perfection, which, we learned, is an ever-moving target.
Many hours were spent in Sersha’s bedroom, surrounded by candles, fairy lights, incense, and tangled cables, creating a sanctuary that nurtured our creativity. In this environment, inspiration flowed effortlessly. Some songs underwent numerous transformations, shaped by live performances and feedback from our musical community, while others remained true to their original form, composed in those intimate, mystical moments.
Our songs reflect not only our growth as emerging musicians but also our personal journeys and evolving awareness of life, self, and relationships. We explore themes ranging from fictional tales of inspiration and mystical experiences, symbolising a universal recognition of nature’s often-overlooked power, to expressions of anger and frustration with societal norms. Our lyrics delve into handling tumultuous relationships, maintaining sanity amidst chaos, and embracing inner awareness, translating these insights into the physical world with expanded mindfulness.
We aimed to convey these emotions not only through our lyrics but also through the dynamics, build-ups, and tones of our music, using our instruments to express our feelings playfully and profoundly.
